Wrangler Based Pickupís Tailgate Spied

Jeep has done a very good job of hiding their Wrangler based pickup under a thick layer of camouflage and half the time we question if a ridge or bumps is part of the actual design or not. Maybe they’ve slipped up with this prototype or the rear was left uncovered on purpose. Whatever the case may be, we finally have a glimpse of what the production tailgate could look like.

Similar to what you’d find on a Ram 1500, the Scrambler’s tailgate has a bulge near the top, which should function as a small wing to help with the pickup’s aerodynamics. What we don’t see is a spare tire mount. No surprise since the spares were mounted to the vehicle’s undercarriage in previous spy shots. Autoblog also doesn't see any logos stamped into the tailgate, meaning Jeep may just slap on a badge or two and call it a day.

Expected to launch some time next year, Jeep’s Toledo, OH plant is already being retooled in preparation for the new Scrambler. When it finally debuts, fans can expect to see the same powertrains already found in the new Wrangler JL; a 285-horsepower V6, a 270 hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, and a 3.0-liter diesel engine.

There are two covered bumps on either side of the license plate area, what do you think those are? For a second I thought they were tow hooks, but those are usually in the front no?

It could be tow hooks or possibly additional lighting as well? Does this prototype also indicate that the Scrambler will be coming standard with a trailer hitch?

I'm sure this prototype was being used to test the Scramblers towing capacity, so that's probably why we see a trailer hitch here. I think whether or not it comes with a factory hitch will be dependant on trim. There is much more to a towing package than the hitch and wiring.

Pricing is the name of the game and that being the case there's just about no reason Jeep has for offering a hitch as standard, not everyone will need it. Some people buy pickups just as an SUV alternative.

But this is the long awaited return of the Wrangler pickup. I assume Jeep would throw a few more standard parts on there to draw people towards the model, including a hitch and rear tow hooks.
