Clear Look At Jeep’s Scrambler Pickup Prototype

We’ve seen plenty of Scrambler spy photos in the past and all of them have been from a distance and relatively blurry. That’s because Jeep has been zealously guarding their test mules and photographers had a hard time getting close enough to take clear shots. Now AutoBlog has released new shots taken from a shorter distance and these are definitely clearer.

Caught roaming around FCA’s North American headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan, the pickup definitely looks like it’s based on the 2018 Wrangler Unlimited platform. Aside form the obvious truck bed, everything else looks almost identical down to the C-pillar and rear doors. Of course on the Unlimited, these doors are angled to make room for the rear wheels. As the pickup’s wheels are sitting farther back on the wheelbase, Jeep will need to make a styling tweak to hide that now flat area.

Though unclear to us, AutoBlog editor Joel Stocksdale used his eagle eyes to examine the Scrambler’s rear suspension system. He found the “shock placement and low anti-roll bar” to be similar to what you’d fine on the Ram 1500 and there are coil springs at all four corners. A solid front axle is to be expected as well.

The Jeep Wrangler pickup should debut next year and go on sale sometime afterwards.

No surprise here, month ago we seen information about how much like the RAM 1500 this is and it makes sense for them to do that. The recipe for this is fairly simple, make it RAM-like but carry on Wrangler characteristics on to some extent. In the end this will be a nice in-between model that slightly undercuts the 1500.

Why go through the process of developing new shock placements and low anti-roll bars for the Wrangler pickup when the Ram 1500's parts works just as well. The sizes are expected to be around the same as well. Wonder what else it'll borrow from Ram.

Exactly and at the end of the day they just want to bring a new Scrambler to the market but just in a way that it won't fall behind other truck rivals. Essentially all we need is a wrangler body on a capable truck frame.

The Scrambler was recently spotted again and there's an odd bulge on its roof. Could be something there or just the wind creating that lift in the camouflage.

Thats definitely just from the wind. I do wonder if they plan on bringing over the JL's new power top to the Scrambler though. The dimensions of the cabin look relatively similar.

Unless they were testing air flow into one of the new roof setups which would make a lot of sense to me. It can allow for adequate air flow similar to what a regular owner would experience but hides the roof well. Plus with what we know about the new JL, its hard to discount the fact of new roof options.
