New Wrangler IS Affordable

The new 2 door Wrangler starts at $26,195 and the four door at $29,995. At least those are the prices Jalopnik says is from official looking documents.
Not bad for so many upgrades in the new generation Wrangler and cheap enough to get one for your stable to match the upcoming Scrambler.

Here's the full list of prices they posted and the comparison with its JK predecessor.
2-Door (JK / JL / Difference)
Sport - $23,995 / $26,195 / $2,200
Sport S - $26,995 / $29,095 / $2,100
Sahara - $30,445 / N/A
Rubicon - $33,645 / $36,395 / $2,750

4-Door (JKU / JLU / Difference)
Sport - $27,895 / $29,995 / $2,100
Sport S - $31,095 / $33,195 / $2,100
Sahara - $34,295 / $36,995 / $2,700
Rubicon - $37,445 / $40,195 / $2,750

Found an interesting info about 1999 Jeep Wrangler Sport, in 1999 it had a starting MSRP of $17,905. Adjusted for inflation between 1999 and 2017 that is $26,880. That means this sport is cheaper than that sport (spare me your arguments about stagnating wages).

That's actually pretty interesting and a point you can bring up when someone complains about the price of Wranglers compared to the hay days. Of course a used one will still be cheaper than a new JL, but if it won't be bashed on the rocks too hard then you may as well get a new one or wait for end of year sales.

What I like about Jeep's pricing strategy is they managed to remain the same price wise. That's a really important achievement for the car maker, and probably that's the reason why Jeep still doesn't offer power windows, power mirrors etc. for their basic trim levels, it would increase the price.

The real question here is why do you or anyone have to say its affordable? That's like saying a Honda Civic is affordable because well... both models can cater to very entry level price points. The Wrangler has done this for many years without fail, its probably what has attributed to the Wranglers success, being a true off-roader that anyone can get.

Different models have varying definitions of what is affordable. People expect to pay a premium for the Wrangler, but not too much and Jeep needs to hit that fine balance between covering inflation costs and satisfying buyers.

But when it comes to what's generally known as entry-level pricing with car/suv ownership the Wrangler fits that which comes down to a mid-$20k-30k vehicle. Anything less than that and you're getting into very small city cars. So in that respect the Wrangler is affordable. Plus you have to look at what people can afford, a low-to-mid $20k vehicle is very attainable.
